Located in the centre of Central Plains area of the People's Republic of China, Zhengzhou is the capital and largest city of Henan Province. As one of the National Central Cities in China, it serves as the political, economic, technological, and educational center of the province.
Zhengzhou is a State-list Famous Historical and Culture City. As of 2020, there are two World Cultural Heritage Sites in Zhengzhou.
Lying on the southern bank of the Yellow River, Zhengzhou is a major hub of China's national transportation network, with railways connecting Zhengzhou to Europe and an international airport.
As of 0:00 on November 1, 2020, Zhengzhou City had a population of 12,600,574 inhabitants, 9,879,000 of whom lived in its urban area, with an urbanization rate of 78.4%. The regional GDP reached 1.2003 trillion (RMB) in 2020. The Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (ZCE) is China's first futures exchange. Zhengzhou Airport Economy Zone is China's first Airport Economy Zone. The Zhengzhou metropolitan area (including Zhengzhou and Kaifeng) is the core area of the Central Plains Economic Zone.
Zhengzhou is also one of the major cities in the world ranked by scientific research as tracked by the Nature Index according to the Nature Index 2020 Science Cities. The city is home to several national key universities in China, notably Zhengzhou University and Henan University.
