Phnom Penh, July 19 (Xinhua/Wu Changwei) - His Excellency Mr. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cambodia said recently in a written interview by Chinese media that the Global Development Initiative proposed by China has been warmly welcomed by the international community, especially developing countries, and that Cambodia strongly supports this initiative. His Excellency believes that this initiative is another public good provided by China to the world, which aims to reduce poverty and ensure food security through international cooperation. It will help strengthen international development cooperation and accelerate the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
His Excellency Mr. Sokhonn said that Cambodia-China relations have withstood the test of time. With constant nurturing by leaders of the two countries in different generations, the bilateral relationship has been upgraded to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership, and has kept growing from strength to strength. The two countries have enjoyed fruitful cooperation and tangible benefits.
Mr. Sokhonn noted that His Excellency Hun Sen, the Prime Minister of Cambodia, had reiterated the fact that Cambodia's development in all fields can not be detached from China's support and assistance. China is Cambodia's largest trading partner, largest source of foreign direct investment, as well as the largest provider of development assistance.. What’s more, the COVID-19 response aid from China has played an important role in promoting Cambodia's economic recovery.
His Excellency Mr. Sokhonn pointed out that Cambodia is undergoing large-scale infrastructure construction, including projects such as roads, bridges, seaports, airports, hydropower stations, and communication facilities, which are all top priorities for its economic development.
His Excellency also said that under the framework of the joint contribution to the "Belt and Road Initiative", Cambodia and China are cooperating on projects, such as the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone, Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Expressway, and new Siem Reap International Airport, which will make significant contribution to further boosting the Cambodian economy. In addition, with China’s help in strengthening Cambodia's soft infrastructure through scholarships, research centers, etc., the collaboration of Belt and Road Initiative also enhanced bilateral cooperation in institutional capacity building, knowledge sharing, human resource development, and other various fields.
