It is learned that as one of the three famous bays in Lianjiang, Dinghai Bay is located in the estuary of Minjiang River and Aojiang River, covering a sea area of 135 square kilometers. With a moderate amount of nutrients and salinity, Dinghai Bay has become a priority for Lianjiang County to build a modern “marine ranch”.
As an experimental field for the ecological aquaculture project of building a hundred distant-water aquaculture platforms for an annual output of ten thousand tons of large yellow croaker), Dinghai Bay has been home to “Zhenyu No. 1”, the world’s first distant-water green aquaculture platform which can rotate automatically, “Dinghai Bay No.1” and “Dinghai Bay No.2”, the distant-water aquaculture platforms developed by local enterprises of Lianjiang County, and other platforms such as “Taiyu”. Compared with inshore aquaculture, these platforms can not only resist wind and waves, but also perform various functions including automatic pH monitoring of seawater.
As an upgraded platform, “Hongdong” is the first project of the smart leisure marine ranch in Dinghai Bay. It is reported that the “Hongdong” Platform is 92 meters long and 36 meters wide, and has a draft of more than 21 meters. Its aquaculture area consists of 3 net cages, has a total water volume exceeding 62,000 cubic meters, and can breed 600 tons of fish at the same time. It is also equipped with several deep-waternet cages that can resist the impact of waves.
According to the administration from Hongdong Fisheries Co., Ltd., the platform, equipped with a recreational fishing center, a marine education center and a catering and residential area, offers three distinctive features. It will provide one-stop services for tourists to enjoy an integrated experience of fishery and tourism, enabling them to cook and eat the fish they catch and buy on the platform. In order to explore a sustainable aquaculture model, the platform will use solar and wave energy as its main powers. Also, a smart fishery center will be set up on the platform to explore smart aquaculture by integrating multiple detection technology like sonar, optics, video, etc.
For now, the “Hongdong” Platform is under construction in Mawei Shipyard, and is scheduled to be operational in Dinghai Bay when completed around September.
