Forum on Smart Ocean of 21st-Century Maritime Cooperation Committee Convened

Forum on Smart Ocean of 21st-Century Maritime Cooperation Committee was convened on May 18. Mr. Lin Jian, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Fuzhou Municipal Committee and President of Fuzhou People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Mr. Shahbaz Khan, Director of UNESCO Cluster Office in Beijing, Mr. Wang Liyong, Deputy Director-General of China Center for Contemporary World Studies, International Department, Central Committee of CPC addressed the opening ceremony. Ms. Zong Linhong, Deputy Director-General of Department of European & Asian Affairs, The Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (CPAFFC), and Mr. Huang Jianxiong, Deputy Mayor of Fuzhou Municipal People’s Government also attended the forum. Mr. Stuart Crosby, Co-President of United Cities and Local Governments Asia Pacific (UCLG ASPAC), Ms. Bernadia Tjandradewi, Secretary General of UCLG ASPAC, and officials of foreign embassies and consulates of relevant countries in China joined via video link. The participants of the event totaled more than 120 people in 70 groups.

Under the theme of “Marine Development Through Science and Technology”, guests of the Forum conducted deliberations around topics such as the construction of marine big data platforms, modern marine agricultural technology, development of smart ocean industries, application of the Internet of Things in ocean-related fields, etc., to pool wisdom for maritime development via science and technology and unlock potential for the blue development that is open, collaborative and universally beneficial, for the joint promotion of maritime economy in cities of countries and regions along the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road.

Prof. Chen Jianming , Director of the Institute of Oceanography, Minjiang University, chaired the forum, in which eight keynote speakers, namely, Dr Toe Aung, Deputy Director General of Public Relations and Information Department, Yangon City Development Committee, Myanmar, Mr. Alfred Nakatsuma, Adviser for the Clean Cities Blue Ocean Project, Ms. Analisa Low, Ambassador of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to China, Mr. Chen Nengwang, Director of Department of Environmental Science, Xiamen University, Mr. Jose Marti Alvarez Hidalgo, Consul General of the Republic of Costa Rica in Shanghai, Mr. Genki Terauchi, Senior Researcher of Special Monitoring and Coastal Environmental Assessment Regional Activity Centre, Northwest Pacific Action Plan, UN Environment Programme, Mr. Chen Zhongjie, President of Hongdong Fishery Co., Ltd., and Mr. Zeng Zhongcheng, Chief Operating Officer of Tatwah Smartech Co., Ltd., shared achievements and experience of various nations in the development of the “Smart Ocean”, to promote the role of marine-related science and technology in the marine economic development in countries and regions along the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road. After the keynote speeches, participants of the Forum also carried out free discussion.
