The Solomon Islands is divided into 9 provinces and 1 municipality. The Western Province is the largest province, which is located in the southwest of Solomon Islands, with a total area of 5,475 square kilometers and a population of 76,649 (according to the 2009 census). Gizo, the provincial capital, has an airport and is the second largest city in the country. The main island is New Georgia Islands. On July 9, 2024, the Western Province and Fujian Province signed an agreement on establishing friendship provincial relations.  

The Western Province is considered to be the tourist destination of the Solomon Islands and the most inclusive area so far. The area is famous for its beautiful tropical islands, first-class diving and snorkeling, coral reefs and World War II shipwrecks, ecotourism huts and headhunting shrines. There are many small lagoons in the province, and most of the country's tourism industry is carried out outside Honiara.
