
Coastal and Ocean Management Institute (COMI), Xiamen University was established in October 2005. It actively participates in domestic and international coastal and ocean management activities at local, national, regional and global levels, promotes and undertakes interdisciplinary, ecosystem-based and cross-sectoral research so as to provide technical support in policy and management for the sustainable utilization of coastal and ocean resources, biodiversity conservation and the protection of the functions of coastal and ocean ecosystems under the interference of human activities, and explores and studies approaches and techniques that can promote cross-sectoral and multi-sectoral collaboration and integration of policies and functions among governments at all levels. Its research fields include coastal and ocean policy and legislation, integrated coastal management and its expansion in transboundary ecosystem management, marine economics, resource assessment and environmental accounting, sustainable development of islands, and human resources development for coastal management.
