In past centuries, transporting goods along the Maritime Silk Road could be a hazardous undertaking. Ships often faced fierce storms on the high seas. To reduce the danger, China's shipbuilders came up with a solution. They developed Fu ships, commonly known as junks, incorporating a special watertight-bulkhead technology. Their revolutionary design allowed the ships to withstand the highest winds and roughest waters.
