The First High-Speed Line in Southeast Asia -- The Jakarta-Bandung HSR Starts Operation

TIME:2023-09-08 18:04

According to China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as China Railway), the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway jointly built by China and Indonesia was put into operation on September 7, cutting the travel time between the two Indonesian cities to 40 minutes from 3.5 hours. Sales of tickets for commercial operation will start in early October. This landmark project under the Belt and Road Initiative marks Indonesia's entry into the era of high-speed rail.
According to the responsible person of the International Department of China Railway, as the first high-speed railway in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway is a flagship project that synergizes the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative and Indonesia's Global Maritime Fulcrum strategy, fully using Chinese railway systems, technology and industrial components. Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway connects Jakarta, the Indonesia's capital, with Bandung, a famous tourist city. The 142.3-km-long Jakarta-Bandung HSR, with a maximum designed speed of 350 km/h, starts from Jakarta, passes through Bekasi City, Bekasi County, Karawang County, Purwakarta County, West Bandung County, Cimahi City and Bandung County, and ends at Bandung City. There are four stations respectively in Halim, Karawang, Puspa Iptek Sundial and Tegal Luar.

According to the responsible person, during the trial run from September 7 to September 30, 8 passenger trains will be started daily between Halim Station in Jakarta and Tegal Luar Station in Bandung according to the train operation map. Citizens along the line can enjoy a free ride experience after booking with Kereta Cepat Indonesia–China (KCIC). Official ticket sales will be started for commercial operation at the beginning of October. At that time, the number of passenger trains will be determined according to market demand, so as to meet the travel needs of people along the route.

The set of Jakarta-Bandung HSR EMUs is designed and manufactured by Chinese enterprises adopting the advanced and mature technology of the Fuxing bullet train with a speed of 350 km/h, which has been adapted to fit the local operational environment and line conditions as well as local culture in Indonesia. It prioritizes the safety and comfort of train commuters. Each EMU is composed of 8 vehicles, with VIP, first-class and second-class seats, with a total capacity of 601 people and locomotive double heading available. It is equipped with barrier-free facilities such as toilets for the disabled, Braille guide signs, and equipment such as containers, coffee machines and microwave ovens, which can provide passengers with good ride experience.

Major stations of Jakarta-Bandung HSR present the distinctive feature of "one station, one scene", highlight modern functions, and showcase Indonesian culture. Integrating the beautiful natural landscape of West Java and local "weaving culture", it is equipped with advanced service facilities and intelligent customer service information system and is seamlessly connected with municipal transportation such as light rail, bus and taxi, making it more convenient and quicker for passengers to travel by high-speed rail. Halim Station, located in Jakarta, has become the largest railway passenger station in Indonesia. With a building area of 26,000 square meters, it can accommodate 2,500 people waiting for the train at the same time. Puspa Iptek Sundial Station is the only station interconnected with the existing general-speed railway in the whole line, which can realize smooth transfer between high-speed railway and general-speed railway.

Even that the complex geological environment along the Jakarta-Bandung HSR made the engineering construction quite challenging, the railway builders from both countries have learned from the successful experience of China's high-speed railway construction, adhered to the concept of ecological conservation, strengthened survey, design, construction, operation and management, safety and quality control, in order to promote the engineering construction scientifically and orderly, with high quality and high efficiency. The route selected avoids unfavorable geology such as landslides and volcanoes to the maximum extent and 13 tunnels and 56 bridges with high standards were built based on innovatively designed and advanced systems such as bridges with better shock absorption and isolation performance, ballastless tracks with higher smoothness, and train operation and control with stronger functions.

During the construction of Jakarta-Bandung HSR, a large number of raw materials such as cement produced locally in Indonesia were purchased and used, which has driven the local economic development. A large number of Indonesian employees participated in the project construction, with a total number of 51,000 jobs created and 45,000 Indonesian employees trained.

According to the responsible person, before the Jakarta-Bandung HSR starts operation, China and Indonesia organized relevant enterprises to carry out joint debugging and test, inspection and acceptance and safety assessment of various professional equipment, and comprehensively improved and adjusted the track status, Pantograph-OCS performance, train control, communication and signal system, etc., to ensure that the line fully met the running conditions. Operation management and equipment maintenance personnel were carefully selected, and strict training and exams were carried out to confirm that they were qualified for those posts.

After the Jakarta-Bandung HSR is put into operation, it will not only shorten the time and space distance between Jakarta and Bandung, but also promote the optimization and upgrading of industrial structure and empower economic development along the route, drive commercial development and the tourism industry, inject fresh impetus into regional economic and social development. It is of great significance for deepening the pragmatic cooperation between China and Indonesia and building the China-Indonesia community with a shared future.
