On May 31, 2017, the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway, also known as SGR, built by a Chinese company was open to the public. The 480-km Mombasa-Nairobi SGR, which connects Mombasa, the largest port in East Africa, and Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city, is Kenya’s largest infrastructure since its independence in 1963. The Mombasa-Nairobi SGR cuts travel time between the two cities by half, from an average of ten hours to approximately five hours.
