News from Fuzhou News Agency on January 12 (Fuzhou Daily reporter Zhang Xiaoxue, correspondent Sun Chao and Chen Zhezhao) The reporter learned from the Municipal Ocean and Fisheries Administration on January 11 that the Summary and Review Meeting on "Satellite Internet Test Project of Fujian Provincial Oceanic Fishing-Boats" was convened in Fuzhou. Gratifying achievements have been achieved on the Satellite Internet Test Project of Fujian Provincial Oceanic Fishing-Boats, a project of High Throughput Satellite Internet “Bringing Broadband Connectivity to the Sea” piloted by Fuzhou.

Pan Delu, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and an authoritative expert in China's Marine field, led the review panel. After rigorous and meticulous evaluation, the expert group fully affirmed and highly appraised the test results and achievements of the project, which means that a new generation of high throughput satellite communication technology has been verified, and also marks that the capability of Fujian Province in marine satellite internet technology has been recognized by authorities.

It is understood that the "Test Project of Fujian Provincial Ocean Fishing-boat Satellite Internet" was carried out under the background of the "Bringing Broadband Connectivity to the Sea" project proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. As a major province of marine fishery, Fujian Province practiced the spirits of pragmatism and innovation and took the lead in verifying the feasibility of relevant technologies. The project was led by Fujian Fisheries Disaster Mitigation Center and undertaken by Fujian Haitian Silk Road Satellite Technology Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Tatwah Smartech Group, with the participation of fishery management departments of various cities.

As is well known, the vast sea is not covered by 4G networks. Thankfully, high throughput satellite internet technology can now provide people on fishing-boats with access to broadband networks through the high throughput communications satellite, offering fishermen at sea a high-speed and high-bandwidth web surfing experience as same as household users. This test was based on the Asia-Pacific 6DKu-band high throughput satellite launched on July 9th, 2020, a high-orbit and high-throughput communication satellite. This satellite owns the widest coverage, biggest capacity and strongest power of its kind in China, and caters to fishermen’s needs such as video chatting with families and friends, fishery trade, maritime rescue and even telemedicine, etc.

To expand the maritime network coverage on all kinds of fishing-boats in Fujian Province and to achieve the province’s “visible and attainable” goals in safety production of marine fisheries, the test project conducted a comprehensive inspection on the application of high throughput satellite internet technology in the field of marine fisheries.

To accelerate “new infrastructure construction” in smart ocean industry and addressing the needs of “bringing broadband connectivity to the sea” through high throughput satellite internet, Fuzhou Municipal Ocean and Fisheries Administration piloted the test project by selecting 6 fish boats of various types and installing a new generation of high throughput satellite internet terminal. After a series of tests, high throughput satellite internet technology has fully proved its ability in providing technical support for the production, supervision, service and other aspects in marine fisheries industry. Experience for its future applications has also been drawn.
